When Tara Verkuil’s young daughter asked to play with “mommy’s make-up,” Verkuil (who had long been an advocate of organic products) had a hard look at the makeup and nail polish in her medicine cabinet. “There was no way I’d let her put some of this on her precious skin or on her nails. Ugh! Just think of how often a child puts their fingers in their mouth,” she says with distress in her voice. Right there and then, Eco Princess was born—Verkuil’s first line of organic products created with little girls in mind. Verkuil worked with chemists to create a collection of 100% natural play makeup, bath, body, and hair products made with certified organic ingredients.
A graduate of Tulane University and Parsons School of Design in Paris, Verkuil has a background in art and interior design. She notes, “I knew that the key to creating my organic products was that they needed to work as well as they looked. I poured myself into creating organic products that offer the same results as some of the high-end salon brands that are chock-full of nasty ingredients. At the end of the day, we gravitate toward certain shampoos and conditioners because they work. Many organic products are ‘clean’ as far as ingredients, but can leave you with dull, lifeless hair.” Verkuil’s award-winning line, called Organic Beauty Now, is crafted for health and beauty devotees who are passionate about organics and believe that a 100% natural product line should not have to sacrifice performance, purpose, and purity.
This busy single mom admits to having little downtime, but when she can find a few spare hours, you’ll find her on horseback. A champion equestrian, Verkuil credits riding with helping her to have enough energy to balance work and parenthood.
